So you are thinking about having bariatric surgery?

So you are thinking about having bariatric surgery?

I went back and forth with this question for 3 years. I have always been bigger than average. After my second baby and with a stressful job, I was packing on the pounds. I felt like I couldn't stop gaining.I think I hit my lowest point when I tried to get on a roller coaster with my husband and they told me I needed to get off because the safety harness would not close. I developed type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. I had no energy and could barely get off the couch when I came home from work. I did weight watchers, whole 30, keto, low carb, gluten free, and nothing worked or stuck for long. I knew I needed a change.

I was lucky enough to work at a hospital that performed bariatric surgery. I was able to see what the diet consisted of and even was able to visit with them after their procedures. I was even more fortunate that the hospital I work at is an ‘Accredited Center’. What does this mean? It means that the hospital had to go through an inspection and reporting process by the ASMBS

(American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery) and the ACS (American College of Surgeons).

  • Research reputable surgeons in your area. I would start with looking at ACS to find an Accredited center in your area. https://www.facs.org/

  • I would then look at Health Grades to see reviews and how your surgeon is rated. https://www.healthgrades.com/

  • Ask any friends or family members if they have any recommendations.

  • Call your insurance company to see if bariatric surgery is covered or what you would be expected to pay.

  • Schedule a consult.

Just remember you do not have to commit!!! Information is key in making your decision and it never hurts to get information..
